Monetising agentic traffic: MCP for publishers and sales houses
AI assistants read your pages but see no banners. How publishers and sales houses monetise agentic traffic: next to Google Ad Manager or as their own ad server, with a 90/10 split and brand safety.
The gap: the agent reads the page, but it never sees the banner A recipe, a product test, a guide to filing your tax return: more and more often, the page is not read by a person but by an AI assistant that assembles an answer for a person. The content is used and the reader gets the answer, but the ad slot next to it stays invisible. An agent does not render a display banner, it does not click a native teaser, and it does not show up in any impression report. For publishers and sales houses this means that a growing share of usage creates editorial and hosting costs but no revenue. The classic model (page view, ad slot, auction) assumes that a browser renders the page. When that step disappears, so does monetisation. The industry is responding, but so far mostly on the buy side and inside the large platforms. In May 2026 Adform opened its whole platform, including its DSP and ad server, to AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT through an MCP server. In September 2026 the German sales house BCN presented a Signals Agent together with PubMatic that turns a plain-language audience description into a bookable deal, connected through MCP and AdCP. German trade press expects publishers to run their own agents that actively sell their inventory. This article describes how publishers and sales houses in the DACH region can monetise agentic traffic with Nexbid today: what is in use, what is built and in pilot, and what comes next. Two sides, one match moment Nexbid is a two-sided marketplace. Each side brings something different: Publishers and sales houses bring content: pages, recipes, articles, tests, reviews, sponsored editorials. They do not bring products. Advertisers bring products and campaigns: a product feed, a budget, a bid. Revenue only happens in the match moment: a user has an intent, an agent fetches matching content, and a product from an active campaign fits that content. Without publisher content, without an advertiser product and without user intent there is no sponsored recommendation and no revenue. A publisher alone is indexed but earns nothing; an advertiser alone has a catalogue but reaches no one. Nexbid handles intent detection, the auction and the protocol in between.
