Every established market has an invisible layer that connects both sides — and that both sides trust: neutral intermediaries. Credit card networks between merchant and buyer. Clearing houses between banks. Standards bodies between manufacturers and consumers. This layer is often invisible — but the entire market doesn't function without it. For AI agent commerce, that layer is still missing. And that is not a minor detail — it is a structural problem that decides whether AI shopping becomes truly safe for consumers or not. The Problem Without a Trust Layer Today, every agent provider says: "Trust us." Every merchant says: "Trust us." And between the AI's answer and the actual purchase lies — nothing. No independent, verifiable layer. No neutral party that verifies claims. This is different than it sounds. Concretely: Hallucinated products: AI models occasionally invent product details, prices, even discount codes. Without a trust layer you see that mistake only at checkout. Fake shops: Phishing merchants are a real problem on the web. Without independent authenticity checks, an agent may unknowingly send you to a fraudulent store. Unverified approvals: "Yes, buy it" is a powerful sentence. Without verifiable traces there is no clear record of what exactly you authorized — if something goes wrong, your memory is pitted against the agent provider's chat history. What a Trust Broker Does for You A trust broker is not another app you have to install. It is the layer between agent and merchant — and it does three things that none of the other parties can do well alone: 1. Verifies Product Information When your agent says "this product costs X, is from brand Y, has feature Z," a trust broker checks in the background whether these claims come from a verified source. The merchant confirmed them, the feed is current, the data is not stale. This closes the "hallucination risk" in agent purchases. If a product claim cannot be tied to a verifiable source entry, the trust broker flags it — and you see it before you consent. 2. Verifies Purchase Authorizations Every authorization you give leaves a trace: timestamp, amount, merchant, product. That trace does not live with the agent provider (who could modify it) nor with the merchant (who could lose it) — but in an independent layer that is neither agent nor merchant.
